Violence is Rising – Here’s How to Stay in Control Without Causing Harm
The world is changing, and not for the better.
Recently, a teenage girl was arrested for plotting a mass shooting on Valentine's Day at a school. When questioned, she stated that she “loves violence.” This is not an isolated case—it’s part of a larger pattern. The glorification of violence has led us to this point, and now, society is witnessing the consequences.
For decades, I have been warning that we were heading toward mass psychosis and unchecked aggression. Today, we see this manifesting in news headlines, social media, and even among so-called leaders, a US politician who encourages street violence. The question is no longer if violence will happen because Violence is rising on the streets of te West—it’s when and how you will respond.
The Answer is Not More Violence – It’s More Control
Violence is Rising, and as martial artists, we have a responsibility—not to destroy, but to control and neutralize threats in a way that prevents harm when possible. True martial skill is not about domination—it’s about mastering the situation with wisdom, precision, and restraint.
This was reinforced during a recent conversation I had with Master Philip Welch.
Master Phil’s Experience: Handling Real-World Violence Without Harm
Master Phil worked for years in a group home caring for individuals with severe mental challenges, many of whom were violent and unpredictable. These situations could turn dangerous instantly. Violence is rising.
Before training with me, he had 12 years of Aikido experience, learning from a highly respected Canadian master. But even with his background, he still struggled to manage violent encounters safely—until he studied The Octagon and Kosho Ryu.
Through this training, he learned how to use angles, positioning, and movement to redirect aggression, control dangerous individuals, and de-escalate violent confrontations without inflicting unnecessary harm. This is the true essence of martial arts—protection without destruction.
Why I No Longer Emphasize Knockouts in Kyusho Jitsu
This discussion reminded me of a message I recently received from a follower. He asked why so many Kyusho Jitsu instructors are obsessed with knockouts.
Yes, I have taught Kyusho knockouts, and I understand the mechanics better than most. But here’s the truth: Kyusho knockouts are dangerous.
I have performed hundreds over the years, but looking back, if I could do it again, I would never have done as many. I allowed my ego to push me toward unnecessary demonstrations. The reality is that these knockouts—while effective—are not always safe, reliable, or the best option for real-world self-defense. Through this training, he learned how to use angles, positioning, and movement to redirect aggression, control dangerous individuals, and de-escalate violent confrontations without inflicting unnecessary harm. This is the true essence of martial arts—protection without destruction. Master Phil understood that Violence is rising and trained for this inevitability.
A Safer, More Effective Approach: The Octagon and Kosho Ryu
Violence is rising, but there is a better way. The Octagon, as taught in Kosho Ryu, is one of the most powerful yet underutilized martial arts tools. Instead of relying on strikes or knockouts, it teaches you to position yourself strategically, using angles and movement to redirect energy and neutralize threats before they escalate.
This is precisely why I have decided to make my Octagon Beginners Course available again.
