How do you destroy a culture? Today, there is a concerted effort by many parties and special interests to dismantle the very foundations of culture and society.

It seems some individuals, unable to control their lives, feel entitled to dictate what is best for the world. 

These groups rely heavily on emotional manipulation to push their agendas, exploiting fear, guilt, and outrage to influence decision-making. But decisions driven purely by emotion are inherently irrational and almost always lead to destructive outcomes.

The Strategy: Destroy Discourse and Language

So how do these forces systematically destroy a culture? The first step is to erode meaningful discourse and then target language itself. Without shared language and the ability to debate ideas openly, a society loses its foundation for understanding and growth.

As martial artists, we understand the significance of language in preserving tradition, identity, and values. Yet, even within the martial arts community, we see the dilution of practices and teachings in the name of inclusivity. While making arts accessible to more people can be positive, the loss of original terminology and cultural context weakens their essence. The same principle applies to broader society—the watering down of language leads to the erosion of culture.

The Attack on Free Speech

One of the most effective ways to destroy a culture is through restrictions on free speech. In today's climate, people are often silenced for fear of offending others. But consider this: studies suggest that those who are the most easily offended are also more likely to be pathological liars. What does this imply about the motivations behind their demands for censorship? Could it be that limiting free speech serves as a smokescreen to conceal deeper dishonesty and insecurity?

Instead of catering to fragility, perhaps the solution lies in fostering resilience. We should encourage honesty and accountability while developing strong, articulate individuals. A society filled with people who cannot read, write, or express themselves effectively is far easier to control and manipulate. Conversely, a population capable of critical thought and clear communication can defend its culture against erosion.

Choosing Not to Be Offended

Ultimately, being offended is a choice—a matter of perception. Personally, I can count on one hand the number of people who have the power to offend me. Why? Because I understand that others' opinions are none of my business. This mindset fosters emotional strength and independence, qualities that are essential for preserving both individual dignity and cultural integrity. Do not let them destroy a culture.

Reclaiming Culture Through Strength and Language

To prevent the destruction of culture, we must actively resist the forces that seek to dismantle discourse, language, and free speech. We must reject emotional manipulation and instead focus on cultivating disciplined, articulate, and resilient individuals. Whether in martial arts or broader society, the path to preserving culture lies in understanding its roots, honoring its language, and defending its principles.

Kosho Ryu what is the Evolution of Learning? Kosho Ryu is not your typical martial art defined by rigid techniques and a set syllabus. Rather, it is a study of natural laws, the human condition, and life itself. As I have stated many times before, Kosho Ryu transcends the concept of a martial art style; it is a deep, ongoing process of learning that encompasses all aspects of life.

Unlike a defined martial art like Hapkido, which is characterized by specific techniques and traditions, Kosho Ryu offers a broader, more holistic approach to learning.

Martial artists, especially those heavily ingrained in traditional styles, often elevate their techniques or schools to divine status. This idolization can become a trap, where the focus shifts from genuine understanding and self-discovery to mere repetition and technical proficiency. In Kosho Ryu, the opposite is encouraged. It asks practitioners to break free from these constraints and engage in a continuous study of movement, natural laws, and the world around them.

What is a Grand Master?

What is a Grand Master? A few months ago, a young man looked at me and said, “Grand Master? You are no Grand Master!” It was an interesting comment, especially considering he didn’t know me at all. Today, it appears that many people in the martial arts world are quick to pass judgment or discredit others as a way to build themselves up.

This is part of a larger trend I’ve observed, where influence and status are pursued for the wrong reasons. A recent poll asked young people, particularly those between 18 and 30, what they wanted to do for a living.

The overwhelming response was, “I want to be an influencer.” While the concept itself isn’t inherently negative, the troubling part is the pursuit of influence without the foundation of genuine experience.

What is a Grand Master?

In martial arts, true influence and leadership come from decades of dedication, study, and the passing of knowledge. It’s not something that can be faked or shortcut. This is where the title of “Grand Master” comes into play.

My journey toward the title of Grand Master began long before I ever acknowledged it. In 2008, I was promoted to 7th Dan in my first art, Hapkido. That rank technically reflected the status of a Grand Master. However, I didn’t feel the need to use the title at that time. For me, it wasn’t about wearing the title as a badge of honor. When did I finally accept it? In 2010, when my first grandchild was born. The title of Grand Master seemed fitting when I became a grandfather—a role that naturally reflects wisdom, guidance, and responsibility.

In a somewhat humorous but insightful comparison, within certain circles, like the mafia, you cannot be called a “Godfather” unless you are literally a godfather to a child. This parallel resonates with martial arts: titles like Grand Master are more than just ceremonial; they carry real meaning rooted in responsibility, mentorship, and experience.

Unfortunately, in today’s martial arts world, titles like Grand Master have often become little more than bragging rights for some. I’ve seen individuals, many of whom are quite young and lacking in true experience, don these titles prematurely. Does this upset me? No, because it’s not my concern, nor is it a reflection of who I am. There is a lot of energy spent on criticizing others—like the popular use of the term “McDojo” to discredit schools that some believe aren’t legitimate. If someone feels threatened by what another person or school is doing, it reveals more about their self-worth than anything else. The only time it becomes an issue is if there is actual illegal activity going on, and then it’s a matter of ethics, not rank.

As for me, I have spent 40 years in martial arts, with much of that time as an instructor. I’ve taught tens of thousands of students over the decades. That’s what the title of Grand Master implies. It is not a symbol of greatness, as some mistakenly believe. I don’t carry pride in it—pride, after all, is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Instead, the title reflects a seasoning, maturity in the martial arts, earned through the years of practice, teaching, and learning from others.

Recently, a follower asked me how I wished to be addressed. The truth is, I don’t really care. Some use my title, while others simply call me by my name. It doesn’t matter to me. It’s a personal choice, and I respect that. My first teacher, Master Hollohan—who was not just an instructor but a true teacher—will always be “sir” to me, even though I have outranked him for nearly two decades. It’s not about rank; it’s about respect. My father will always be my father, no matter my age or status. It’s the same principle with my mentors.

What is a Grand Master? In Bruce Lee’s Tao of Jeet Kune Do, he stated that titles are just names, not worth obsessing over. Ironically, within the Jeet Kune Do community, there has been significant division and argument over titles, particularly about who should carry on Bruce Lee’s legacy.

Ultimately, the title of Grand Master is merely that—a name. Don’t fuss over it. What truly matters is not the title, but the responsibility and wisdom that come with it. A Grand Master is a guide, a mentor, and a student of life who has spent decades learning and sharing that knowledge with others.

The Tunnel Vision Trap: How Martial Artists Can Maintain a Broader Perspective.

Tunnel vision refers to a visual field defect in which a person’s vision becomes narrowed or constricted, allowing them to only see directly in front of them, as if looking through a tunnel. In this condition, the peripheral or side vision is severely impaired or completely lost.

On the other hand, peripheral vision, also known as side vision or soft vision, refers to the ability to see objects and movement outside the direct line of sight, towards the edges of the visual field. 

This type of vision is facilitated by the rod photoreceptor cells in the retina, which are more sensitive to light and motion than the cones responsible for central vision.

Here are some key differences between tunnel vision and peripheral vision:

  1. Field of view: Tunnel vision severely restricts the visual field, while peripheral vision allows for a wider field of view, typically up to 180–200 degrees horizontally and 130–150 degrees vertically in humans.
  2. Cause: Tunnel vision can be caused by various medical conditions, such as glaucoma, stroke, brain injury, or certain medications, while peripheral vision is a normal aspect of human vision.
  3. Visual acuity: Central vision, which is affected in tunnel vision, is responsible for fine detail and high visual acuity, whereas peripheral vision has lower acuity and is better suited for detecting movement and general shapes.
  4. Functionality: Tunnel vision can significantly impair daily activities and mobility, as it limits the ability to perceive objects and obstacles outside the narrow field of view. Peripheral vision, on the other hand, plays a crucial role in spatial awareness, navigation, and detecting potential threats or hazards in the surroundings.

In summary, tunnel vision, is a visual impairment characterized by a severely constricted field of view. Peripheral or soft vision refers to the ability to perceive objects and movement outside the direct line of sight, providing a wider field of view and contributing to spatial awareness and navigation.

Adrenaline and Tunnel Vision

When a person experiences a highly stressful or life-threatening situation, the body’s sympathetic nervous system is activated, triggering the release of adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) and other stress hormones. This “fight-or-flight” response prepares the body to deal with the perceived threat by inducing various physiological changes, including the narrowing of the visual field, which is known as stress-induced or adrenaline-induced tunnel vision.

Here’s how this process works:

  1. Pupil dilation: Adrenaline causes the pupils to dilate, allowing more light to enter the eye. While this can enhance visual acuity in low-light conditions, it can also contribute to the narrowing of the visual field.
  2. Reduced peripheral vision: During high-stress situations, the brain focuses its resources on the perceived threat, prioritizing central vision over peripheral vision. This narrowing of the visual field is an evolutionary adaptation that helps the brain concentrate on the most critical information for survival.
  3. Attentional tunneling: Stress and adrenaline can cause attentional tunneling, which is a cognitive process where the brain filters out non-essential information and focuses solely on the perceived threat or task at hand. This tunneling of attention can further contribute to the narrowing of the visual field.
  4. Blood flow redistribution: Adrenaline also causes the blood vessels in the body to constrict, redirecting blood flow away from the extremities and towards the core muscles and organs essential for survival. This redistribution of blood flow can potentially affect the retina and contribute to the temporary impairment of peripheral vision.

Tunnel vision induced by stress and adrenaline can have both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it can help individuals concentrate on immediate threats or tasks, potentially enhancing their performance in certain situations. However, it can also increase the risk of missing important cues or hazards in the periphery, which can be detrimental in situations where situational awareness is crucial, such as driving or combat scenarios.

It’s critical to note that stress-induced tunnel vision is a temporary condition and typically subsides once the perceived threat has passed and the body’s stress response returns to normal levels.

Overcoming Tunnel Vision

There are several techniques and training methods that can help individuals maintain better peripheral vision and situational awareness during stressful or high-adrenaline situations:

  1. Stress exposure training: This involves gradually exposing individuals to controlled, simulated stressful situations, such as through virtual reality simulations or role-playing exercises. The goal is to train the mind and body to better manage the physiological and cognitive effects of stress, including the tendency to tunnel vision.
  2. Peripheral vision drills: These exercises are designed to improve peripheral awareness by training the individual to focus on objects or movements in their peripheral field of view. Examples include catching or tracking objects thrown from the side or using specialized software that presents stimuli in the periphery.
  3. Mindfulness and breathing exercises: Practicing mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation, can help individuals better regulate their stress response and maintain a broader field of view during high-pressure situations.
  4. Sports training: Participating in sports that require excellent peripheral awareness, such as martial arts, boxing, or team sports, can help individuals develop better situational awareness and peripheral vision under pressure.
  5. Decision-making drills: Training individuals to make rapid decisions while simultaneously processing information from their peripheral vision can help reinforce the habit of maintaining broader awareness during stressful situations.
  6. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT techniques can help individuals identify and modify negative thought patterns and cognitive distortions that may contribute to tunnel vision during stress.
  7. Physical conditioning: Maintaining a good level of physical fitness and cardiovascular health can potentially strengthen the body’s ability to manage stress and maintain peripheral vision under pressure.

It’s important to note that training for better peripheral vision and situational awareness during stress is an ongoing process that requires consistent practice and exposure to controlled stressful situations. Additionally, individual differences in physiology and psychology may affect the effectiveness of these techniques.

These titles aim to capture the essence of overcoming tunnel vision, a common challenge in high-stress martial arts situations, and the importance of cultivating peripheral awareness and situational consciousness. They also highlight the techniques and training methods that martial artists can employ to combat the narrowing of their visual field during intense encounters or sparring sessions.

But, technology is pushing us to new heights of learning and practice. 

When I was a boy, the options for learning martial arts were few. They were not easy for the public to access. Even today, this challenge persists, particularly in specialized disciplines like Kyusho Jitsu.

Today, I wish to share with you my personal voyage into the depths of Kosho Ryu, a path that has not only shaped my understanding of martial arts but also offered profound lessons on the essence of learning and mastery.

The Genesis of a Lifelong Quest

My Journey with Kosho Ryu all began in the year 2000, within the humble confines of my dojo. From the outset, I was captivated by the wisdom of Kosho, a discipline that promised not just physical prowess but a deeper connection to the spiritual and philosophical aspects of martial arts. This was not a journey embarked upon lightly; it was a commitment to transform, to challenge the limits of my understanding and abilities.

My initiation into Kosho Ryu was under the controversial yet enlightening tutelage of Richard Buchan, a direct disciple of Hanshi Juchnik. This period was marked by rigorous training, philosophical debates, and, most importantly, the kindling of a fire that would drive me to delve deeper into the teachings of Juchnik. Despite the divergence of paths with Buchan, my resolve only strengthened, propelling me on a quest that has spanned over two decades.

Confronting Skepticism and Embracing the Path

My Journey with Kosho Ryu has not been without its challenges. Skepticism regarding my connection to Mitose’s lineage surfaced, casting shadows of doubt over my legitimacy. Let me address this unequivocally: my lineage, while inspired by the traditions of Kosho Ryu, is not tied to Mitose. Instead, it is rooted in the profound teachings and guidance of Hanshi Bruce Juchnik, the 22nd Grand Master, whose endorsement by James Mitose himself is beyond reproach.

A recent encounter with a critic, questioning my proficiency and lineage, served as a poignant reminder of why my pursuit of Kosho Ryu is about much more than historical connections. It’s a pursuit grounded in the belief that knowledge, understanding, and the pursuit of mastery transcend the confines of history and lineage.

Disrespect in Martial Arts: A Personal Reflection. In the intricate world of martial arts, respect stands as a cornerstone, reflecting the essence of its philosophy and practice. As a person who embraces a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to life and martial arts, I deeply value respect and cannot overlook its absence.

My journey into Kosho Ryu began in 2000 under the guidance of Shidoshi Richard Buchan, a figure surrounded by controversy—a trait I find neither uncommon nor unwelcome in the realm of martial arts. However, my path diverged from his due to concerns over the motives behind his teachings, despite the controversy that often accompanies both of us.

Disrespect in Martial Arts

Despite warnings about Shidoshi Buchan, my quest for martial arts wisdom led me to continue my studies with Hanshi Bruce Juchnik and his video products, whose teachings became the foundation of our dojo, Art Mason’s Peaceful Warriors. With 18 years of experience in the arts by 2002, my commitment to martial arts was unshakeable, and my pursuit of knowledge unwavering.

In my interactions with the martial arts community, I have always placed a high value on family and the personal connections that enrich our journey. This was exemplified during a training session with Shidoshi Buchan, where I had the pleasure of meeting his family. Such experiences underscore my belief in the importance of community and personal relationships within the martial arts.

In 2021, my desire to delve deeper into Juchnik’s teachings led to a direct conversation with him, revealing he was teaching Adam Buchan, Shidoshi’s son. This interaction, while initially promising, eventually led me to decide against re-engaging with the Buchan family, a decision further solidified by my disdain for social media platforms like Facebook.

Disrespect in Martial Arts

Adam’s attempts to connect, including an unexplained message urging me to “do the right thing and call me” only served to reinforce my reservations. His later actions, particularly a disrespectful comment on social media about my Dog Rescue, highlighted a concerning disregard for the principle of respect—a principle I hold dear and expect from those within the martial arts community. Disrespect in Martial Arts is a BIG problem.

This is the image he was commenting on when he said, “you are a nut.” If you do not like Dogs, we HAVE NOTHING TO DISCUSS. And since he is NOT on my “friend list” this means he is trolling me. Wanna play? I will sniff your IP and block you right at your provider.

With four decades of dedication to martial arts, my focus has always been on the pursuit of knowledge and the philosophical underpinnings of Kosho Ryu, rather than on ranks or accolades. Kosho Ryu, with its emphasis on the study of Natural Laws, offers invaluable insights for any martial artist. It’s a discipline that I continue to teach and share, emphasizing the importance of respect, humility, and lifelong learning.

Disrespect in Martial Arts is NOT what Kosho Ryu teaches and violates Kosho at is core.

As I reflect on these experiences from my home in Romania, my hope is for the martial arts community to remember the foundational values of respect and integrity. These are not just ideals, but essential practices that define us as martial artists and individuals. To those navigating the complex landscape of martial arts, let us lead by example, fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and mutual growth.

Disrespect in Martial Arts, well you disappoint me young man. I think you have likely done the same to your father. And this is also a sad reflection and disrespect to Hanshi Juchnik. You have MUCH to learn. If you had asked to work together, we may have talked. But that ship has sailed.

You never reply to this type of mental illness as you will only make it worse.

I cannot wait to see the video, more for my lawyer for defamation.

Plus, NO ONE HAS THE RIGHTS TO A MARTIAL ARTS NAME. And who is he to make these threats?

Without hesitation, my answer was a resounding “Lord Yes!” As someone deeply embedded in the world of martial arts, and indeed, any discipline grounded in its principles, I hold a steadfast belief in the power of freely sharing knowledge.

The notion of hoarding information, often seen as a manifestation of narcissism, is something I categorically reject.

The martial arts community finds itself at a crossroads, contending with the pervasive challenge of narcissism. This is a phenomenon greatly exacerbated by social media platforms, with Facebook being a prime example. Such platforms have regrettably turned into breeding grounds for pretense and the propagation of untruths. While I engage with Facebook to disseminate articles and insights on martial arts, I am acutely aware of, and critical towards, its role in fostering narcissistic tendencies. Facebook has bred Narcissism in Martial Arts.

Narcissism in Martial Arts:

Narcissism, characterized by an excessive preoccupation with oneself, an overinflated sense of self-importance, and a discernible lack of empathy, spans a broad spectrum. This range covers everything from benign self-focus all the way to the debilitating condition known as narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). It encapsulates a variety from slight vanity to severe issues in interpersonal relationships. Those with NPD typically crave excessive admiration, exhibit a sense of entitlement, exploit others, and are either envious or believe they are the subject of envy.

In our digital era, a degree of narcissism might appear to be the norm. ow every it is not normal and encouraged by social media’s “pretend to be what you are not.” However, when it hinders the ability to forge empathetic, healthy connections, it raises significant concerns, potentially necessitating intervention.

Narcissism in Martial Arts:

One might wonder, when observing a seasoned master showcasing his physique, whether this borders on narcissism. From my perspective, it indeed does. Such displays stray far from the humility and respect that form the bedrock of martial arts. Our bodies should be treated with respect, not flaunted for admiration.

Narcissists often resort to lying and secrecy, further alienating themselves from the core values of martial arts. True practitioners are committed to lifelong learning, acknowledging that mastery is a continuous journey, rather than a destination. My philosophy is to teach everything I learn openly and without reservation. While this stance may not be universally accepted, a diversity of viewpoints is vital, as long as we all remain committed to growth and learning.

I advocate for a martial arts practice characterized by openness, continual learning, and the unfettered sharing of knowledge, devoid of the dark cloud of narcissism in Martial Arts:.

In an age where genuine connection and awareness seem increasingly scarce, overshadowed by the superficial glow of screens and the incessant buzz of social media, I find refuge and purpose in the enduring principles of Kosho Ryu.
